Final Project - Independent Research Project

 Toxic City - Game Form

For this project I am planning on taking the experiences that people have shared with me from project 1 and sharing those again in a new way through a game. It will be abstract themes taken from the ideas shared or literally ones to help tell the same information in a different way.

Inspiration for the project:

  • Unmanned:
    • The game "Unmanned" was developed by a small independent game development studio called Molleindustria, which is based in Italy. The game was released in 2012 and is a short interactive experience that explores the psychological impact of drone warfare on a U.S. Air Force pilot and his family. The game challenges players to question the morality and ethics of modern warfare and the role that technology plays in shaping our perceptions of war.
    • The game was designed by Paolo Pedercini, who is the founder of Molleindustria and is also a professor of game design at Carnegie Mellon University. Pedercini is known for creating a number of politically charged games that challenge players to think critically about social and economic issues.
  • "Dys4ia" by Anna Anthropy. "Dys4ia" is a short autobiographical game that explores Anthropy's experiences with gender dysphoria and her decision to undergo hormone replacement therapy as part of her gender transition. The game was released in 2012 and has been praised for its honest and insightful portrayal of gender identity and the challenges of transitioning.

PLATFORMS to use?:

  • Unity
  • Bitsy
  • Twine
  • Unreal engine

As an artist and game designer, I am excited to share my latest creation with you: The Gaming Gallery: Exploring the Ups and Downs of Online Gaming.

This narrative-driven adventure game delves into the complexities of online gaming culture. Through the journey of my protagonist, players will experience the highs and lows of virtual friendships, toxic behavior, and the effects of anonymity. Themes of loneliness, connection, and disappointment are explored through the interactions with other players.

The idea for this game was born from a research project in which I interviewed people about what online gaming means to them, and they shared one positive and one negative aspect they have experienced during their gaming time. Using the Bitsy engine, I designed all of the tiles and sprites within the game creation engine.

It is important to me to bring to light the toxicity and struggles that come with being connected to an online world. My hope is that this game will raise awareness and encourage more conscious choices when it comes to gaming. While it can be a powerful tool, a comforting hobby, and a connector to friends all over the world, it should also be enjoyed in moderation.
